Satanta was a Kiowa chief who was present at the signing of the Medicine Lodge Treaty in Kansas in 1867. Called the “Orator of the Plains” for his eloquent pleas on behalf of the Kiowa, Satanta eventually agreed to move his people onto a reservation. He was later imprisoned at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, for leading raids on wagon trains, and he died in 1878. Satanta was named among the top 25 notable Kansans in 2011.
