Kindergarten Band
This photograph of the Sheldon Kindergarten band was taken circa 1895 in Topeka, Kansas. The students lived in Tennessee Town, an African American community in west Topeka settled by Exodusters from Tennessee and Mississippi in the 1870s. The Reverend Charles M. Sheldon, pastor of the nearby Central Congregational Church, helped form the kindergarten. From the collections of the Kansas Historical Society, the print was produced for the Kansas Historical Foundation.
