Tornado, Hardtner, Kansas, 1929
This dramatic photograph of a tornado on the ground was taken at 4:30 p.m. June 2, 1929. As the funnel moves over Hardtner, Kansas, hail stones can be seen in the foreground. The Hardtner Press describes the tornado "as a big gray elephant or sausage balloon strung across town with one end in the cloud and the other switching around in a cloud of dust on the ground." From the collections of the Kansas Historical Society, the print was produced for the Kansas Historical Foundation.
