Southern Kansas Fair Association
This richly illustrated 1891 poster promotes the fair to be held in Wichita, Kansas, sponsored by the Southern Kansas Fair Association. The young woman dressed in white with a bonnet trimmed with flowers holds a sheaf of wheat. Fairs were a way to showcase a community’s best livestock, agriculture, and products. Since the early 20th century Kansas has been called the “Wheat State,” the state’s most important crop. From the collections of the Kansas Historical Society, the print was produced for the Kansas Historical Foundation.
