John Brown Capitol Mural #16257
"Tragic Prelude" is one of the murals painted in the Kansas State Capitol (1937-1942) by artist John Steuart Curry.
John Brown was important in Kansas history during the struggle for statehood(1854-1861). He arrived in Kansas to help the anti-slave forces keep Kansas a free state when it joined the union on Janurary 29, 1861. This period was known as 'Bleeding Kansas".
This mural is the most famous of Curry's artwork in the Kansas State Capitol.
